Race officials are taking precautions to beat the heat when the Grand Haven Triathlon and Duathlon take place for the sixth consecutive year on Sunday. "The weather forecast sounds like it's not going to be raining on Saturday or Sunday morning, but it sounds like it will get warm and humid,' race director Ron Knoll said. "As a result, we're taking extra precautions acquiring extra water and additional ice.' Knoll also said he's been in contact with the director of the race's emergency medical services.

Spring Lake junior Marcus Fry was recently named to the Division 2 all-state boys golf team. Fry was one of just 10 players to make the Division 2 first team. He earned his spot by averaging 38.1 strokes per nine-hold round this season. Fry placed seventh at the state meet, shooting rounds of 70 and 76. "He deserved it,' Lakers' coach George Bitner said. "He had a good season. It's not just finishing in the top 10 at the state meet. It includes the entire season.'

In a few weeks, Joe Duff and Jeffrey Nordquist will be running as teammates at Grand Valley State University. On Saturday, the two outstanding runners were competitors at the Grand Haven High School Patriots Day Run. Nordquist, a junior-to-be at GVSU, outlasted his teammate-to-be Duff in the 5K event, running a fantastic time of 16 minutes, 28 seconds. Duff placed second in the annual fourth of July weekend race, crossing the finish line in 16:54.

When Jon Dault started the Mike Herman Memorial Free Soccer Camp four years ago, he had no idea how quickly his new venture would blossom. That first camp, slapped together in 20 days, drew just over 200 young soccer players. This year's camp, which takes place at Grand Haven High School on July 11-13, already has over 550 participants registered, with more expected.

Lightning, roaring thunder and heavy rain did not stop the West Michigan Youth Sailing Association Regatta on Friday. "Considering the weather, we had to postpone," said Stacey Reierson, director of the Spring Lake Junior Sailing Association. "But once we got out there, it was fantastic.' More than 50 kids sailed in the competition's five fleets: Optimist green; Optimist red, white and blue; Butterfly; Laser; and 420.

The Grand Haven Area Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously at Monday's board meeting to grant the request of the Grand Haven High School equestrian team to become a varsity, non-funded sport. After a brief presentation given by GHAPS assistant athletic director Robin Bye, and supporting comments by Superintendent Keith Konarska, board member Joanne Query acknowledged the team's coach, JoAnn Kosanic, for her many years of service to equestrian sports in the community.

The Midwest Beach Volleyball Tour will make its second of three planned stops in Grand Haven today. The MBVT Barefoot Wine Open begins at 8 a.m. and continues with action for men's and women's professional and amateur teams, along with age group competitions for those down to 14-and-under. The inaugural event, held on June 11, saw Grand Haven's Stevo VanderWerp and his doubles partner, Evan Engle, take home the Men's Pro Division title. Kellie DeMerrit and Vicki Vega of Royal Oak won the Women's Pro Division.

In the midst of a dramatic rally that tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth, the West Michigan Whitecaps and Fort Wayne TinCaps were suspended due to rain on Thursday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. The game will be resumed on today at 6 p.m. Gates will open at 4 p.m. for season ticket holders and 5:45 p.m. for the general public with Dick Tracewski on hand for a Tiger Friday.

In tribute of its centennial celebration, Spring Lake Country Club will be hosting a holiday weekend full of golf the old-fashioned way - with hickory stick clubs. Spring Lake Country Club golf professional Josh Lathwell said 50 sets of hickory clubs were rented for the celebration from Play Hickory Inc. of San Diego. There was also a need to purchase several 1920s-era golf balls, as well.
