The Detroit Pistons have chosen Kentucky guard Brandon Knight with the eighth pick in the NBA draft. Knight averaged 17.3 points per game as a freshman last season for the Wildcats. He joins a Detroit team trying to rebuild after missing the playoffs two straight seasons. The Pistons went 30-52 in 2010-11, and coach John Kuester was fired. The team hasn't hired a replacement. Detroit does have a new owner. Tom Gores completed a deal to purchase the team from Karen Davidson less than a month ago.

Although Mother Nature may try to dampen the championship match of the Spring Lake Invitational Tournament this morning, it should be an intriguing final once it does get teed up. In a mathup that could be labled the established champion against the up-and-coming challenger, Charlevoix native Maureen Whitehead will look to defend her SLIT title in the Championship Flight, while West Olive resident and 2009 Grand Haven High School graduate Collette Hansen will be seeking her first - in just her second ever apperance at the 90th annual women's match play tournament.

Grand Haven senior Aliina Weykamp and Spring Lake senior Katie Smith each earned second-team all-state girls soccer honors for their outstanding seasons this past spring. Weykamp, who has committed to play soccer at the University of Illinois next year, was a four-year starter for the Bucs.

Dan Bylsma of the Pittsburgh Penguins has won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year. Bylsma, who grew up in Grand Haven, led the Penguins to the playoffs despite the absences of stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, who both missed much of the season. The Penguins (49-25-8) had the second-most victories and points in franchise history.

Soccer in the Sand is returning to Grand Haven for the fifth consecutive year this weekend, bringing a festive atmosphere to the Grand Haven City Beach. "We bring live music to all our events, so that, along with all our unique vending options, makes for a fun day,' said event organizer Chris Lemay. The first Soccer in the Sand visit to Grand Haven drew 20 teams. Lemay expects over 100 teams on Saturday and Sunday, with divisions ranging from 8-and-under to adult coed and men's open.

The threat of rain couldn't cool off the red-hot scores at Monday's qualifying round for the 90th Spring Lake Invitational Tournament. Ten different players shot rounds in the 70s at Spring Lake Country Club, and three who carded 79 missed out on the championship flight, including four-time event champion Joan Garety. Jean Steinbacher and Donna Benford tied for medalist honors with rounds of 75. Steinbacher will be the No. 2 seed in the championship flight after winning the tiebreaker with a par on No. 2.

With women's golf taking center stage at Spring Lake Country Club this week, some of the attention should focus on the club's newest assistant golf professional, Louise Haller. Haller came to SLCC earlier this year after serving as a golf professional at a pair of public courses in Northwest Indiana the past several years. She jumped at the chance to move north and bring her talents to Spring Lake Country Club.

During his high school days at Grand Haven High School, Asa Kelly had a pair of great mentors to learn from in cross country coach Tom Laughlin and track coach Adam Mousseau. After enjoying success running in both sports at Grand Haven and Grand Valley State University, Kelly has followed in Laughlin and Mousseau's coaching foot steps, and has enjoyed resounding success at Benzie Central High School.

Nicklas Lidstrom will return to play for the Detroit Red Wings. The team announced the decision today before a scheduled conference call with Lidstrom and general manager Ken Holland. The 41-year-old Swede, who will return for a 20th season, had considered retiring. Lidstrom is a Norris Trophy finalist for the 11th time in 13 seasons. If he wins the award for being the NHL's top defenseman - it would be his seventh - he will match Doug Harvey's total and trail Bobby Orr's record by only one.
