It's hard to imagine the Spring Lake varsity softball team without sensational first baseman Evie Lorimer and ace pitcher Sam Weerstra. But if not for a few twists of fate, the Lakers might have been without that pivotal pair of contributors, and Spring Lake likely would not be preparing for Saturday's Division 2 regional contest against Belding at Hope College. Lorimer, already one of the most decorated batters in the rich history of Spring Lake softball as a junior, nearly left the school district prior to her sophomore season.

While Spring Lake entered the 2011 softball season with a largely inexperienced lineup, Belding returns eight of its nine starters from a team that reached the Division 2 state semifinals. The Lakers hope they've gained enough experience to hang with the powerful Redskins when the two teams meet up at Hope College in the Division 2 regional semifinals on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Grand Haven fell behind 6-0 to the hosts after two innings and couldn't claw all the way back in a 6-2 final. Bucs' head coach Morey Wagenmaker was pleased with a trio of relief pitchers - Reid Weber, Brody Anderson and Cody Sutton, who shut the door on the Norse and did not allow a hit or run after the second inning.

As we wove our way through a mass of red, white and blue-clad humanity following the United States' 2-0 win over Canada in the Gold Cup opener at Ford Field on Tuesday, my friend had a dazed look on his face. "Are you OK,' I asked. "Oh yeah,' he said in a dream-like voice, looking around at the thousands of soccer-crazed U.S. supporters. "This is how soccer should be.' ---

Six weeks ago, Jeremy Thelen never would have guessed he'd be sporting a mohawk. Of course, at that time, Thelen's Spring Lake varsity girls soccer team appeared to be going nowhere fast, mired in a mild slump that left the Lakers with a record right at .500. But the Lakers have come a long ways since then. On Saturday, they beat Fruitport, 3-0, to claim the Division 2 district championship, two weeks after wrapping up a share of the Lakes Eight Conference title.
