SL soccer's title satisfies revenge factor

The returning members of the Spring Lake varsity girls soccer team never really managed to get over last year's crushing upset loss to Fruitport in the opening round of the state tournament. A 3-0 victory over those same Trojans in Saturday's Division 2 district championship game finally gave the Lakers a bit of closure. With the win, Spring Lake advances to Tuesday's Division 2 regional semifinals against Cedar Springs.

SL softball wins district title amid controversy

Spring Lake pitcher Sam Weerstra's range of emotions went from tears of sorrow to tears of jubilation within a few seconds, all because of a controversial ending to the Lakers' Division 2 district softball championship game against Orchard View on Saturday. With Spring Lake clinging to a 5-4 lead with two outs in the top of the seventh inning at Wanrooy Field, Orchard View junior standout Megan Vanderal stepped up to the plate and smashed a two-run home run deep over the left field fence off of Weerstra, giving the Cardinals an apparent 6-5 lead.

Track state finals: GH's Keefe narrowly misses out on pole vault title

Grand Haven junior Jordan Keefe missed out on an individual state title in the pole vault excruciatingly close fashion during Saturday's Division 1 state finals. Keefe and Jennifer Schornak of Macomb Dakota each cleared the bar 11 feet, 6 inches, but Schornak was awarded the title because she had fewer misses at the height than Keefe.

Strong Day 1 helps Shrimpboat take Offshore Challenge title

A little luck on Saturday morning went a long ways for captain Bob Swantek and the crew aboard Shrimpboat. Swantek and his fellow anglers caught several big king salmon early Saturday morning, and they rode that momentum all the way to victory in the Grand Haven Offshore Challenge fishing tournament, which wrapped up on Sunday.

Baseball/softball district roundup: Whitehall's Kuipers shuts down SL baseball

Spring Lake's varsity baseball team was confident it could advance to the district championship with its ace pitcher, Nick Keller, on the mound during Saturday's Division 2 semifinal at Hickman Field. Instead, Keller and the Lakers were outdueled by a dominating effort by Whitehall's Sam Kuipers. Kuipers retired the first eight batters he faced, limited the Lakers to just three singles, and led the Vikings to a shutout victory, 3-0. The loss ends Spring Lake's season at 15-11-1.

John Kuester juggled his lineup, benched veterans and tried seemingly every combination he could think of to shake the Detroit Pistons out of their funk. When none of it worked, he lost his job.

Area teams compete for district titles today

Today is the busiest prep sports day of the year, with district tournaments and state finals taking place at various sites across the state. Local teams will vie for district championships in baseball, softball and soccer, while area athletes will compete for all-state recognition at track and field state meets as well.
