Spring Lake's varsity girls soccer team began its season with a dominating performance against Coopersville, but couldn't put a ball in the net and settled for a 0-0 tie. "We played well, possessed the ball, and we attacked,' said Lakers' coach Jeremy Thelen. "But I think we got frustrated because we didn't score early. We started taking long-distance shots, which weren't very dangerous. "It's early in the season and we're still a little rusty.'

Grand Haven's varsity girls basketball team won its first-ever state championship on Saturday in the most thrilling game in the history of the program. The Buccaneers (27-1) battled back from 18 points down and scored the go-ahead basket with just six seconds remaining when senior point guard Shar'Rae Davis went coast-to-coast a layup and a 54-53 lead. Grosse Pointe South had one last chance to win the game, but the Bucs' Abby Cole got a hand on Cierra Rice's final effort and the Buccaneers stormed the floor in celebration.
