Fruitport's bread and butter is creating scoring opportunities off its full- court pressure defense. Mona Shores had no trouble solving that on Thursday, and the Sailors didn't have many problems handling the Trojans' half-court defense, either. The host Sailors dominated the rebounding edge and held the Trojans to just seven made field goals in a 52-22 result in the finals of the Muskegon Sports Hall of Fame Girls Basketball Classic. In the consolation game of the event, Muskegon defeated Reeths-Puffer, 58-47.

Grand Haven varsity girls basketball coach Katie Kowalczyk-Fulmer said she wanted a tougher non-conference schedule this winter - and starting with today's 3:30 p.m. showdown against Detroit Martin Luther King, her wish has been granted.

Spring Lake placed third out of four teams at the 36th annual Wildcat Swim Invitational, held at Jenison High School on Thursday. Despite failing to contend for the title at the event, Lakers head coach Penny Zacek saw plenty of good things from her squad - a tribute to the hard work they've put in over Christmas break.

Fruitport's varsity boys basketball team had a 16-11 lead on undefeated Comstock Park after the first quarter on Wednesday, but the Trojans couldn't keep the Panthers contained the rest of the way in the Trojans' 64-54 setback.
