Senior Scott Staal, making his first varsity start, completed 16 of 20 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns as Grand Haven won the inaugural Coast Guard Trophy with a season-opening 35-10 win over Traverse City Central. All four of Staal's touchdown passes went to Danny Cotter. Staal also ran for a score.

Authorities said a $1,500 reward is being offered for information related to the beating death of a swan on Traverse City's West Bay. The Traverse City Record-Eagle reported that a man attacked the swan July 3. The reward is for information that results in the apprehension and conviction of the attacker. First Lt. David Shaw of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources' Law Enforcement Division said the case likely won't be solved without help from the public.

Authorities said an 18-year-old man has died while swimming at the Clinch Park Marina in Traverse City. The Traverse City Record-Eagle reported that Michael Knudsen of Mancelona may have received an electrical shock in the water while swimming Monday with a friend. He went under the water about 7:30 p.m. and didn't resurface. The friend reported getting a shock. Rescuers arrived, and marina employees cut power to the dock. Two firefighters jumped into the water and found Knudsen unresponsive under the dock.

A teenager who police said told them he killed a 16-year-old Traverse City girl has been charged with murder. Robert Schwander, 17, was arraigned Thursday in a Grand Traverse County court on a first-degree murder charge in the death of Carly Lewis. He's charged as an adult. He entered a not guilty plea. Bond was denied. A preliminary hearing is June 27. Police believe Schwander, the son of a sheriff's deputy, killed Lewis on June 2 in a vacant building and moved her body to a sand pile at a public works site two days later.

The Lakeshore Cougars semi-pro football team opened up its 2011 schedule with a 29-18 road victory against the Traverse City Wolves on Saturday. Head coach Deirreio Duncan said the long road trip plus the hot weather plagued the Cougars early on in the Great Midwest Football League contest. "We did not click during the first half (offensively), but after the bus lag was over, we took care of business,' he said.
