For the three captains of the Spring Lake varsity soccer team, the feeling of losing a game in the Lakes Eight Conference is unknown. That's because it has yet to happen. The streak of 30-straight wins will carry over to at least next fall after the Lakers clinched the final game in Lakes Eight competition this season, winning the conference tournament championship game over visiting Orchard View on Monday at Spring Lake Middle School, 1-0.

The Muskegon Big Reds took top honors in the Class A division of the Grand Haven Marching Band Invitational Saturday, playing selections from the rock opera "Superstar.' The Fruitport Trojans kept the theme flying with "Angels' to take first place in Class B. As the host school, Grand Haven wrapped up the evening by performing an exhibition to music from the ‘70s and ‘80s rock band Styx, including "Mr. Roboto' and "Too Much Time on My Hands.' GHHS did not compete.

It looked almost like the leftovers of a demolition derby on Saturday at a field adjacent to the Spring Lake Township Fire Station on 148th Avenue, just south of M-104. But once firefighters converged on the scene, it became more obvious that the mangled vehicles were part of a set of scenarios designed to give the emergency personnel a chance to train with some specialized equipment.

Robert and Lisa Frey of Ferrysburg dropped off two heavy dehumidifiers at the Ottawa County parking lot in Grand Haven on Saturday morning. "They both work and they both use a lot of electricity,' Lisa said. The Freys brought the units to a four-hour recycling event hosted by the Grand Haven Board of Light & Power and the Padnos Iron & Metal Co. For each appliance, the Freys will receive a $15 rebate in the mail from the municipal utility, BLP Controller Kristin Kratt said, as part of the BLP's Energy Smart program.

A Homecoming victory helped the Fruitport Trojans remain on track to wrap up a share of the Lakes Eight Conference championship and secured a state playoff berth for the Trojans. According to coach Steve Wilson, his team has only begun to reach its goals. "Our kids played well,' said Wilson, whose team is now 6-1 overall and 5-1 in league games. The theme of the night was pie, and everyone got a piece of the action Friday at Jeffers Elementary School. The P.I.E. (peace inspiring education) Harvest Festival included children's games, prizes, pizza, raffles, a pie-baking contest and a silent auction for the chance to throw pies in the face of Spring Lake Public Schools staff. The annual school fundraiser was expected to raise close to $10,000, according to Jeffers Parents Organization President J.J. DesJardin.

Spring Lake's varsity boys tennis team is heading to the state meet for the ninth consecutive season after placing second at Thursday's Division 3 regional meet, hosted by the Lakers. Petoskey won the regional title with 30 points, taking first place in six of the eight flights. Spring Lake and Cadillac tied for second with 21 points, also earning state finals berths. Comstock Par was third in the nine-team event with 10 points. Fruitport was seventh with two points.

The votes are in and, for the second year in a row, Ottawa County Judge Ed Post is the overall winner of Grand Haven ArtWalk. Post won the 2011 contest for his photograph titled "Blueberries in the Snow.' "It's very gratifying and very surprising,' he said, "especially when I saw all the other work people created.' The winners of the second annual contest were announced Wednesday at ArtWalk headquarters.

The local pistol and rifle range remains closed, coming into one of the busiest times of the year, as police continue an investigation into a shooting incident that left one man injured and several homes damaged in a nearby subdivision. A large group of residents from the Cutter Park subdivision showed up at the monthly board meeting of the North Ottawa Rod and Gun Club on Monday night to express their concerns about the club's activities.

Grand Haven's varsity soccer team had win No. 11 within reach, but a pair of late goals by East Kentwood spoiled the Buccaneers' unbeaten season. The Falcons rallied from a 2-1 deficit with two goals in the final 10 minutes, clinching the regular-season O-K Red Conference title and earning the top seed in next week's league tournament. East Kentwood entered the game ranked No. 2 in the latest Division 1 state poll while Grand Haven checked in at No. 6.

Grand Haven's offense has been spectacular through the air this fall. On Friday, it was the Buccaneers' ground game that stole the show. Senior running back Devin Howard rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns, and Dakota Smith added 138 yards and a pair of scores, helping the Buccaneers roll over the winless Grandville Bulldogs, 41-13, on Homecoming night at Buccaneer Stadium. The Bucs' offensive line paved the way for the victory as Grand Haven ran the ball 51 times for 375 yards.
