Grand Haven's varsity football team won its Homecoming game over Grandville on Friday night, 41-12. At halftime of the game, Buccaneer seniors Norris Ellis and Shar'rae Davis were crowned Homecoming king and queen. Ellis is an outstanding defensive lineman for the Bucs' football team while Davis is a star on Grand Haven's girls basketball team that reached the Class A state semifinals last fall. The seniors were announced as winners of the Homecoming spirit week competition.

Twenty years after putting the first seedling in the ground, Dick Winkel said he still gets excited when the harvest begins. The owner of Winkel Chestnut Farm & Nursery with his wife, Leslie Sowers-Winkel, was busy looking at the nut-laden trees, searching for any damage from high winds on Friday. Harvest started last week and the chestnuts are dropping to the ground fast, but there is still a lot of them clustered on the branches, he noted.

For the second consecutive year, the Lakes Eight Conference will hold a league-wide cancer awareness night on Friday. The event, called "Tackle Cancer Together,' will feature conference teams wearing purple and white jerseys, which will bear the names of people who have either passed away to cancer, survived cancer, or are currently battling the disease. Both Spring Lake and Fruitport will play games on the road on Friday, so they will wear white uniforms with purple lettering.

Bus loads of students converged on Grand Haven to participate in the second annual ArtWalk scavenger hunt on Tuesday, as part of ArtWalk Education Day. The students started arriving at 10 a.m. at the ArtWalk headquarters, 18 N. Fifth St., for the scavenger hunt that had them searching for various types of art - including a watercolor painting, something made of wood, a two-dimensional piece and a sculpture.

A blown penalty kick late in the first half, then a botched defensive assignment early in the second half left the Spring Lake varsity boys soccer team looking up at rival Fruitport on the scoreboard. Lakers' senior captain Kyle Kendall wasn't worried. "They went ahead, and we looked into each other's eyes and that picks you up,' Kendall said. "We knew we had each others' back.'

Despite all the tail wagging, the proceeds from a benefit wash in Spring Lake on Saturday afternoon didn't go to the dogs. The money raised at the event will help cover medical expenses for an uninsured Spring Lake family. Zachery Bugielski, 18, suffered a closed-head injury when he fell from his skateboard on Aug. 23. Zachery's memory was affected by bleeding on the brain, but his recovering is going well - according to his mother, Amy Van Strate.

The community got a taste of "Rocket Fish' over the weekend during ArtWalk 2011's "Music, Minnows and Munchies' event. Kelly Gates, ArtWalk 2011 spokesperson, said the "Rocket Fish' event was "a huge success.' "Seven-hundred members of the public voted for ‘Rocket Fish' and ‘minnows' (Saturday) from noon to 3 p.m. along the waterfront in Grand Haven and on Washington Avenue,' she said.

Senior Lydia Gleason captured first place in the 100-yard breaststroke at Saturday's Spring Lake Invitational, but she was the lone Laker at the top of the podium in the talented field of competitors. In the end, the Lakers settled for third-place overall, trailing runaway winner Byron Center (555 points) and runner-up Mona Shores (295). Spring Lake totaled 287 points. Fellow Coastal Conference foe Manistee was next with 201, followed by Rockford's ‘B' team with 197. Ludington was last in the eight-team field with 164.

It might have been the start of fall, but Grand Haven Rotarians flipped on the switch Friday to a new splash pad aimed at keeping people cool in the summer heat. "I am delighted that it works - we literally finished this morning,' said Dr. Kennard Creason, past president of the Rotary Club of Grand Haven. "It's going to be a lot of fun. It was great to see the kids running around in it.' According to Creason, the Rotary Club raised $245,000 for the $240,000 project from many local individuals and organizations.

Downtown Grand Haven was hopping Friday night during the Indie Rock Festival, held in the first block of Washington Avenue. The event, which continues at 6 tonight, features 10 bands over the two-day period. Festival organizer Mike Coleman said combining the Indie Rock Festival with ArtWalk made sense. "Music is art and we thought we would combine the two," he said. "It's the opening weekend of ArtWalk so we thought it was a perfect fit." Grand Haven Main Street DDA Executive Director Dana Kollewehr agreed.

Lakers' head football coach Jerry Rabideau gave the shortest postgame speech of his career Friday night. "This is the greatest victory in Spring Lake football history!' Rabideau roared to his players, along with several hundred Lakers' students who had rushed the field. It's tough to argue with Rabideau following the Lakers' stunning 7-6 win over heavily-favored Fruitport on a picture-perfect night for football at Spring Lake's Thomas E. Grabinski Field.

With Grand Haven's Alyssia Land and West Ottawa's Lauren DeShaw sprinting toward the finish of the 400-yard freestyle relay Thursday evening, you never would have known that there was nothing tangible at stake. Land may have been touched out at the wall by the Panthers' DeShaw, but the heart that the Bucs' foursome showed in that final race put a smile on the face of Grand Haven coach Doug Thorne.

With the stroke of a brush, organizers kicked off Grand Haven ArtWalk 2011 at the stroke of noon on Wednesday. Grand Haven Mayor Roger Bergman, city councilmen Ed Nieuwenhuis and Dennis Scott, and City Manager Pat McGinnis each painted a portion of a special ArtWalk logo that will hang in the event's headquarters, 20 N. Fifth St. "This promises to be a wonderful two-week event in Grand Haven,' Bergman said during Wednesday's opening ceremony. "The organizers and volunteers have outdone themselves.'

Grandville's talented collection of singles players put the host Grand Haven varsity tennis team in a pretty big hole during Wednesday's O-K Red Conference meet. Grand Haven's doubles teams nearly dug the Bucs all the way out. The Bucs' No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams scored exciting three-set victories against the Bulldogs, and their No. 2 team won in straight sets, giving Grand Haven a chance to tie the match if the No. 4 team of George Austin and Reid Murphy could win at No. 4.

A toddler playing with a lighter started a house fire late Monday afternoon on Slayton Street, according to Lt. Renee Freeman of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. Emergency crews responded to 1539 Slayton St. at 3:45 p.m. when a woman called 911 and said a bed was on fire. Andrea Young tried to extinguish the blaze, but quickly called 911 and evacuated the house - said her husband, Matt Young. Andrea and the child were the only ones home at the time. They were not hurt, authorities said.

A Lansing-area man suffered a leg injury in a crash of an antique airplane shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday at the Hatfield Airport, 18155 120th Ave. Dan Schiffer, 62, seemed otherwise OK, said his cousin, Al Schiffer, another one of the pilots. Dan was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. His condition was unknown at this time. Airfield owner Bill Hatfield said they had about 14 planes onsite Saturday for a gathering called a "Quiet Birdmen Fly-in."

As Dan O'Keefe sliced open a salmon, pointing out its organs and the proper way to filet the big fish, Colleen Bloomquist of Grand Haven encouraged her 7-year-old granddaughter, Ellie, to get a close look. "It's really neat to see that this is happening here and that (salmon) can develop the way they do,' Colleen said.
