Boat falls off trailer on Spring Lake street Friday

A Grand Haven man was cited for not having a secure load after the 27-foot boat he was trailing fell off the trailer and onto West Savidge Street in Spring Lake around 6:30 p.m. Friday, according to police. The man, whose name was not released by police, was driving a pickup truck with his friend's boat on the attached trailer. When he pulled his truck and trailer out of the Wesco gas station and onto South Cutler Street, the boat fell off the trailer, Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Officer Adam Hill said.

Scouts make quick work in beach sweep

A half-dozen Boy Scouts made quick work in cleaning up an Ottawa County beach on Saturday morning. "We do so much community service, you wouldn't believe it,' said Jamie Corrin, mother of Boy Scout Troop 31 member Nolan Corrin. "I got a feeling all of them are going to make Eagle Scout, which is going to be something special.' The boys from the Marne-based troop joined about six other people to pick 35-40 pounds of trash from the sand at North Beach Park in Ferrysburg in a little more than an hour Saturday.

Salmon Festival tips off with fish boil

Friday night, Andrew Sytsma was taking bites of salmon. This morning, he hopes the salmon are the ones biting. Sytsma, of Sparta, will join his dad, Gary Sytsma of Grand Haven, for their fourth and final salmon fishing tournament of the year. They spent Friday evening enjoying the scents and sounds at the eighth annual Fresh Catch Fish Boil along Grand Haven's waterfront. "This is our second year here, so I think that makes us regulars,' Gary said. "It's good food, good entertainment, and you see people you may only see once a year.'

Rivals team up on Day of Caring

Grand Haven Area Public Schools and Spring Lake Public Schools may be rivals in the sports arena, but the two districts teamed up in a friendlier competition on Thursday during the annual United Way Day of Caring. Michelle Thyfault, assistant director of development and communication of the Greater Ottawa County United Way, dreamed up a school swap for the annual volunteering event after a national United Way conference in May. She talked with both school district superintendents, who were thrilled with the idea.

Tuesday Musicale turns 100

Adele Zelenka says 100 years is "pretty much a record' for local clubs. The West Olive woman is the current president of the 45-member Tuesday Musicale, which celebrated its centennial this week at the Grand Haven Community Center. "It was women who got together in their homes in the beginning and gave musical programs because they wanted to influence the music in this community,' Zelenka explained the club's origins. "They wanted people to have music to listen to and to join into to.'

DNR confirms cougar in Ontonagon County

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources on Monday confirmed the presence of a cougar in Ontonagon County. The animal was captured on a trail camera on private property on Sept. 8, walking toward the front of the camera and clearly showing it has an ear tag and a radio collar. DNR Wildlife Division staff visited the property Sept. 12 where the trail cam is mounted and verified the location of the camera.

In a night highlighting the new in Fruitport's volleyball program, the Trojans didn't want to disappoint against an old neighboring rival. Fruitport unveiled its newly-renovated volleyball-only gymnasium and its 2010 Class B state championship banner on Tuesday at Fruitport High School, and then proceeded to accomplish what it's done quite often at its old stomping grounds - defeat Spring Lake.

Salmon Festival returns this weekend

The Grand Haven Salmon Festival, in its eighth year, celebrates the passing of summer while welcoming the fall harvest season and salmon migration, highlighting Grand Haven as an autumn destination. It takes place this weekend along the city's waterfront. Grand Haven Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Marci Cisneros said with the event approaching the decade mark, they've been able to tweak it to benefit those who attend.

Another season of live music was kicked off at Loutit District Library on Sunday. Muskegon musicians Ruth and Max Bloomquist performed for the library crowd and played a mix of songs from their own personal catalog, as well as a variety of covers. "I found this show today to be particularly emotionally involving,' said Max, who plays the string bass. "I was really getting a warm vibe from the crowd - so I was more into it, so it was cool.'

Special teams miscues doom Bucs

Two huge special teams plays carried Rockford to a pivotal early-season victory over O-K Red Conference rival Grand Haven on Friday night. The Rams' K.C. Zenner returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown four minutes into the game, then 90 seconds later, teammate Ryan Hartnagel returned a blocked put 3 yards to paydirt and a 14-0 lead. The Buccaneers were forced to play catch-up all night and never were able to get within striking distance in a 42-30 loss at Rockford's Ted Carlson Memorial Stadium.

Prep soccer: Haven's hard work pays off

Grand Haven varsity boys soccer coach Aaron Dean had some stern words for his team at halftime of Thursday's showdown with Spring Lake. The Buccaneers certainly got the message. Grand Haven (3-0-3) scored three consecutive goals after trailing 1-0, recording a 3-1 win over previously-unbeaten Spring Lake (6-1) on the Lakers' home field. "He was really pounding it in our heads that we have to work hard, a lot harder than we were,' said Buccaneer senior Nate Rose, who scored the go-ahead goal with 24 minutes remaining in the contest.

City officials hope to find new CG landmark

A symbol marking the entrance to Grand Haven and welcoming people to Coast Guard City USA has been permanently moved to a Muskegon museum. A city Department of Public Works crew - with the help of Barrett Boat Works staff and an Ottawa County Jail work crew - moved the boat Wednesday morning from the Seventh Street traffic island, just south of Beacon Boulevard, to the Great Lakes Naval Memorial & Museum. Nancy Wezeman said the old boat is something that is always noticed when she and others arrive in Grand Haven.

GH grad uses Pere Marquette train for film

He may be delivering pizza at night, but Grand Haven resident Jake Bowen, 22, hopes his daytime fling will help him jump-start a career in the filmmaking industry. The recent Grand Valley State University graduate has started work on a feature-length film for his senior thesis and plans to use the 90-minute movie as his resume. Bowen and several members of his film crew were spotted shooting on location last week at the Pere Marquette train at Grand Haven's Chinook Pier.

First day of school: Seniors set the tone

Students spanned the spectrum of emotions this morning at Spring Lake High School. On a crisp, cool and sunny start to the school year, seniors mingled over breakfast in the parking lot, while freshmen scurried about the hallways in search of their lockers. Madeline Dekker was one of those freshmen. The 15-year-old transferred to Lakerland from Grand Haven this school year. "It's really scary because I don't know where my locker is,' said Dekker, who approached technology teacher Aaron Andres in the hallway to ask for directions.

Hundreds participate in Third Street Bridge Walk

The chill of fall was in the air as hundreds of people turned out for the 4th annual Third Street Bridge Walk in Grand Haven on Monday. "I think a lot of people are here because it is a beautiful day,' said Mayor Roger Bergman, who helped to organize the event. The nearly 4-mile trek took walkers from the Third Street bridge on Harbor Island, down the Grand Haven boardwalk and to the end of the south pier. Once the walk was finished, people were able to walk to Chinook Pier, where there were prizes and ice cream provided by Temptations.
