The final special program for Loutit District Library's "John Adams Unbound' exhibit gave attendees a history of the musical style at the time of the country's second president. Don Hoogenstyn gave a presentation of music of the Colonial America era at the Grand Haven library on Thursday night. The presentation included musical selections, and an explanation of the musical instruments and composers of the period.

Dozens of people waded to shore and two were rescued by helicopter from a tour boat that was damaged by a wave in Lake Michigan near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, authorities said. The operator of the tour boat Pictured Rocks called for help shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday after a wave reportedly went over the boat's bow, smashing a window and causing the boat's electronics to malfunction, the Coast Guard said. The boat had 61 people aboard. No major injuries were reported. Waves in the area were 2- to 4-feet high at the time, the Coast Guard said.

Light rain and humidity didn't stop more than a hundred runners from taking part in the 2011 Coast Guard Park Trail Run at Coast Guard Park in Ferrysburg on Saturday morning. Todd Losee, race director for Inspirational Racing, the company behind the run, said he estimated about 160 runners took part in this year's run. "We've had a real good turnout,' Losee said. "We've had about a 50-percent increase over last year, so it's been a real nice increase in people.'

Firefighters from seven departments battled a series of small fires inside a Fruitport-area foundry Tuesday night after hydraulic fluid apparently leaked and started a fire in the center of the plant, according to Spring Lake Township Fire Chief Rick Nuvill. No injuries were reported. Second-shift employees evacuated the Casting Technologies Co. building at 14638 Apple Ave., just east of Fruitport, when the fire started just before 9:30 p.m. One of the employees said it was hard to tell how big the fire was because there was so much smoke.

Paulina Lawton of Grand Haven held up a wild Hawaiian shirt for her friend, which she thought he could use. "I have like 40 (of those),' said Reggie Harper of Ferrysburg. "It would be 41.' "I don't think you have enough,' Lawton said.

Mother Nature wasn't fooled Thursday night at the Grand Haven Community Center. She was honored - front and center stage on the model runway. French Academy of Cosmetology in Spring Lake hosted its annual student competition at the Community Center. The 32 pupils went wild with the Mother Nature theme - crafting models' hairstyles into flowers, animals and weather patterns. Their works were judged on creativity, difficulty, makeup and attire as each model paraded down the runway in true fashion show pace and style.
