An unidentified man who allegedly robbed The Reef convenience store at gunpoint was arrested following a car and foot chase Saturday evening in North Holiday Hills near the intersection of Hickory Street and Iroquois Drive in Spring Lake Township. Police from several area departments responded to the call about 8:20 p.m. after an employee at the store, located at the intersection of West Spring Lake Road and Grand River Avenue in Ferrysburg, called for help.

It was a quilters paradise at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grand Haven on Friday when the Lighthouse Quilt Guild presented the Beacons of Inspiration & Love Quilt Show. "We have about 120 quilts, and they're in a variety of sizes from wall quilts to large bed-sized quilts,' said event co-chairperson Cyndi Phillip. "And we even have a wearables category this year, which is new.' The event concludes today. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the church, 901 Columbus Ave.

The final special program for Loutit District Library's "John Adams Unbound' exhibit gave attendees a history of the musical style at the time of the country's second president. Don Hoogenstyn gave a presentation of music of the Colonial America era at the Grand Haven library on Thursday night. The presentation included musical selections, and an explanation of the musical instruments and composers of the period.

The Lakeshore area was drenched by rain and thunderstorms Wednesday night and early today - causing localized flooding, some downed branches and spotty power outages. "Officially, up until midnight, it was 1.87 inches' in Grand Haven, WZZM-TV meteorologist Joe Kopecek said. Kopecek said more rain fell after midnight that would have increased this total, but he didn't have any official figures for it as of this morning.

Dozens of people waded to shore and two were rescued by helicopter from a tour boat that was damaged by a wave in Lake Michigan near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, authorities said. The operator of the tour boat Pictured Rocks called for help shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday after a wave reportedly went over the boat's bow, smashing a window and causing the boat's electronics to malfunction, the Coast Guard said. The boat had 61 people aboard. No major injuries were reported. Waves in the area were 2- to 4-feet high at the time, the Coast Guard said.

About 75 teams came out for the Midwest Beach Volleyball Tour's last of three stops at Grand Haven on Saturday. "It's something that a lot of people enjoy,' said Stacey Johnston, who ran the amateur tournament. "(The tournament helps) the sport to grow and it's just fun to be in the sand and be at the beach and hang out.'

Light rain and humidity didn't stop more than a hundred runners from taking part in the 2011 Coast Guard Park Trail Run at Coast Guard Park in Ferrysburg on Saturday morning. Todd Losee, race director for Inspirational Racing, the company behind the run, said he estimated about 160 runners took part in this year's run. "We've had a real good turnout,' Losee said. "We've had about a 50-percent increase over last year, so it's been a real nice increase in people.'

Rain held off for those attending the annual Coast Guard Picnic at Coast Guard Park in Ferrysburg on Saturday, an event celebrating the 221 years of service provided by the U.S. Coast Guard. The event featured games for adults and children, a beer tent, food and music by local musicians, and a special honor for those who currently lead the city of Ferrysburg from the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival Committee.

The Sunset Coast Cruisers raised more than $800 Wednesday in memory of a Grand Haven public safety officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty 17 years ago. The 16th annual Scott Flahive Memorial Cruise drew in 112 cars old and new. "Last year I had 150 (cars),' said Kurt Pravda, president of the Sunset Coast Cruisers and organizer of the event. "I think the heat's keeping people down.' The drive is kind of like a funeral procession, Pravda said.

Firefighters from seven departments battled a series of small fires inside a Fruitport-area foundry Tuesday night after hydraulic fluid apparently leaked and started a fire in the center of the plant, according to Spring Lake Township Fire Chief Rick Nuvill. No injuries were reported. Second-shift employees evacuated the Casting Technologies Co. building at 14638 Apple Ave., just east of Fruitport, when the fire started just before 9:30 p.m. One of the employees said it was hard to tell how big the fire was because there was so much smoke.

Village officials, Friends of the Grand River Greenway and others were on hand Monday evening at Mill Point Park for groundbreaking ceremonies for the first phase of the Grand River Greenway project. "We are thrilled that our fundraising efforts have come to fruition,' said Megan Crumbacher Doss, chairwoman of the Friends of the Grand River Greenway. "We have received 98 percent of our initial goal of the $1.3 million. More pledges are coming in for this amazing project.'

Sidewalk construction is ahead of schedule along River Street, according to Village Manager Ryan Cotton. The sidewalk installation, part of a $223,000 Safe Routes to School federal and state grant, includes River Street from Lake Avenue to Fruitport Road. Next week, sidewalk pouring is scheduled for the west side of Fruitport Road north to Lakeside Trail. Also included in Safe Routes to School construction was the west side of Prospect, north of Exchange and South Street, which was completed earlier this summer.

Mother Nature wasn't fooled Thursday night at the Grand Haven Community Center. She was honored - front and center stage on the model runway. French Academy of Cosmetology in Spring Lake hosted its annual student competition at the Community Center. The 32 pupils went wild with the Mother Nature theme - crafting models' hairstyles into flowers, animals and weather patterns. Their works were judged on creativity, difficulty, makeup and attire as each model paraded down the runway in true fashion show pace and style.

The park's grass may have absorbed some of the sounds, but the crowd for Wednesday's Sounds of Summer concert enjoyed it nonetheless. "It's a lot of stuff to do for kids and it's a lot of fun,' said Jen Weathers of Grand Haven, who brought her daughters: Alexa, 7, and Annah, 6. For a while, the girls were entertained by Camden Peña, a 16-month-old Grand Haven boy who broke away from the watch of his aunt to dance and play a kazoo on the grass.

"Under the Big Top' is the theme for this year's Tri-Cities Garden Club's flower show. The show will be held this week at Spring Lake District Library, 123 E. Exchange St. in Spring Lake. Hours are 3-8:30 p.m. Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Crafts will be a new part of the flower show. They will be featured in a section called Circus Fun Stuff, according to club member Elaine Cleven. Categories are Circus Teddy Bears, Elegant Elephants and Clown Toppers.
