Jake Vanderlaan and Willie Bennick fondly remember playing for youth soccer teams such as the Tri-Cities Strikers when they were children. Their experience was made more special, they said, because Mike Herman often volunteered his time to help coach at their practices. "Mike was a huge influence on me,' Vanderlaan said. "During those years I wasn't sure if I wanted to pursue soccer completely. But from watching Mike, and idolizing how he played, he made that an obvious choice that it was the sport for me.'

One person was injured in a two-vehicle accident early this afternoon on U.S. 31, south of Ridge Street. James Hicks, 52, of Muskegon Heights was taken to North Ottawa Community Hospital following the 12:30 p.m. accident on the northbound lanes of U.S. 31. Police said his injuries were not serious. Hicks was driving a 1997 BMW north on the highway when he either hit the wall and then a northbound pickup truck, or hit the truck and then the wall almost head-on.

Classic cars once again took over downtown Grand Haven for the annual Jaycees' Wheels of Grand Haven Car Show. "It turned out to be a great day,' event chairman Sam Janson said today. "We thought it might rain, but it waited until this morning.' Janson said there were about 260 registered vehicles that participated in this year's show, along with a few non-registered classic cars that showed up at the last minute. Cars, trucks and motorcycles lined Washington Avenue from Harbor Drive to Fourth Street, and overflowed onto side streets.

Despite an earlier mix-up, an event to collect signatures to recall Gov. Rick Snyder was held Saturday afternoon in Grand Haven's Central Park. The event was part of a statewide effort to collect more than 800,000 signatures that would start the recall process on Snyder for his support of the Emergency Financial Manager law, said Jason Collins of Spring Lake. Collins is a teacher for the Newaygo County alternative high school program and one of three Ottawa County residents heading countywide efforts to recall the governor.

In an attempt to keep up with their moms, dads, aunts, uncles and other prominent role models, more and more youngsters are becoming involved in endurance events. That fact was clear on Saturday as 68 kids ages 6-16 took part in the Grand Haven Kids' Triathlon, which is held as a precursor to Sunday's Grand Haven Triathlon and Duathlon. "My mom started doing them and I just followed in her footsteps,' said 13-year-old Cole Kramer of Grand Haven.

A steady stream of children passed Sue Lavin's game at the 2011 St. Mary's Festival on Saturday afternoon - many of them stopping to try their hand at "PeeWee Pinball.' The game, she said, worked by having children launch a marble through a field of pins and bumpers, landing in a colored slot. The color determined the number of prize chips they won, which could be exchanged for toys at the prize booth.

It was a day of change for U.S. Coast Guard Sector Field Office Grand Haven on Friday, as the community said good-bye to outgoing Cmdr. Robert Hemp. During his farewell to the community and personnel of the U.S. Coast Guard in Grand Haven, Hemp thanked the men and women serving here. "No officer successfully completes a command tour without a crew committed to success,' he said.

Matthew Dickinson, 9, smiled as a colorful bird stood on his shoulders. The macaw, Dickinson's favorite bird, flapped its wings and added to the chorus of squawks throughout the room. Margie Davis of Grand Haven presented a children's program at Loutit District Library on Thursday morning. She brought parrots from the Lakeshore Parrot Haven Sanctuary to teach kids about the birds.

Two people were taken by ambulance to the hospital after colliding in the bowl of the Grand Haven Skate Park early Tuesday afternoon. Bob Hammond, 28, of Grand Rapids and Nick Heil, 16, of Fruitport, were both alert and talking when they were taken away by North Ottawa Community Hospital ambulance and were going to be OK, said Grand Haven Department of Public Safety Officer Tom Winegar. Police and paramedics put Hammond and Neil on backboards and slid the stretchers up a ladder from the skating bowl.

In a few weeks, Joe Duff and Jeffrey Nordquist will be running as teammates at Grand Valley State University. On Saturday, the two outstanding runners were competitors at the Grand Haven High School Patriots Day Run. Nordquist, a junior-to-be at GVSU, outlasted his teammate-to-be Duff in the 5K event, running a fantastic time of 16 minutes, 28 seconds. Duff placed second in the annual fourth of July weekend race, crossing the finish line in 16:54.

The Tri-Cities area was filled with sun and plenty of activity during the Independence Day holiday. Monday began with festivities in the city of Ferrysburg, where a parade was held. "It was a great turnout,' Ferrysburg Mayor Jeff Stille said. "We've had progressively more and more people turn out every year. God bless this beautiful day - it really helps to have a nice healthy turnout.'

Two Spring Lake residents safely evacuated their home late Friday morning when a close lightning strike hit a sprinkler system electrical line and started a fire inside their house, Spring Lake Township Fire Chief Rick Nuvill said. Syed Mahmood, 18615 Woodduck Lane, said he was cooking eggs for his daughter at about 11:40 a.m. when there was a big bang and his smoke alarms started sounding. Storms had been rumbling through the area all morning, but this possible lightning strike sounded like it was just outside his house, Mahmood said.

After a winter and spring of repair along a segment of the Grand Haven boardwalk, officials rededicated the section - and announced that they have plenty of funding available for any work in the future. Ken Formsma, who organized the 2009 fundraiser to repair the boardwalk, said the boardwalk will always be able to be maintained because "money is not an issue.'

Fruitport resident Kirt Walbrink didn't get to ride in the 246-foot airship that floated over Muskegon and the Tri-Cities area on Wednesday, but the Farmers Insurance agent said he and his family still had fun taking part in the on-ground festivities. "My girls were really excited about that,' Walbrink said of the airship's take-offs and landings near a gate close to Ross Park in Norton Shores. "We watched it fly by about 300 feet away and 100 feet in the air.'
