A Grand Haven man suffered facial injuries on Thursday after his car left the road and slammed into a tree, according to Deputy Tim Smith of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Joseph Corbett, 18, was driving his 1997 Oldsmobile Aurora eastbound on Robbins Road about 12:06 p.m. when he veered off to the south side of the road and took out a row of mailboxes, said Sgt. John Wolffis of the OCSD.

The fans who braved the cold and made it to the final 10 minutes of Grand Haven's girls soccer showdown against Fruitport were rewarded with a fantastic show. The Buccaneers and the Trojans combined for four goals in the final 10 minutes and settled for a 3-3 tie in the season-opener for both teams. The host Buccaneers trailed 2-0 at halftime, and were still behind by a pair of goals late in the game before senior midfielder Aliina Weykamp created a spark that ignited the home team.

Ottawa is the healthiest county in Michigan, according to a report released today by the University of Wisconsin Popular Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Up from second place in 2010, highlights from the 2011 report indicate that 9 percent of Ottawa County residents report being in poor or fair health, 17 percent smoke. It also said 9 percent of Ottawa County children live in poverty and 85 percent have access to healthy foods.

By the time she had been placed in the school where Erin Gruwell taught, Maria Reyes said she had one more chance to straighten-out before she was put in jail until her 18th birthday. Having just served nine months in jail, Reyes - 14 at the time - didn't hold out much hope for herself. "The only thing that I was ever good at doing was being a bad kid,' Reyes told Lakeshore Middle School students on Monday afternoon.

ALLENDALE - All three Science Olympiad teams from Grand Haven Area Public Schools will advance to the state tournament in April after performing well at Saturday's regional competition. Grand Haven High School's team took first place, beating out other high school teams by a wide margin with a score of 43 points. West Ottawa High School took second place with 120 points - with the lower score being the better one. Grand Haven's score was a tournament record, said Mike Reed, head coach of the GHHS team.

SPRING LAKE - The gentle sounds of strings serenaded more than 60 listeners Sunday afternoon at Spring Lake District Library's monthly Music by the Fireplace concert. The Grand Valley State University String Trio includes Pablo Mahave-Veglia on cello, Gregory Mayten on violin and Paul Swantek on viola. The trio was formed in 2009 as an outreach program of the school's music department. The musicians are all instructors at the Allendale university.

The world of fashion came to Grand Haven on Thursday night when Donaylle Nicole Hair Studio of Grand Haven hosted the fourth annual spring style show, "Lakeshore Style Revolution,' to benefit the Center for Women in Transition. "We decided to work closely with that organization I would say five years ago,' Donaylle Rogers said. "We just heard about an organization that does so much to stop domestic violence and sexual abuse - and, because we're an organization of women, we felt it was close to our heart to help other women.'

ROBINSON TOWNSHIP - Damage was estimated at close to $200,000 in a fire this morning that destroyed a pole barn, and damaged a house trailer and a nearby residence. Nobody was injured and "most of the cats were accounted for,' said Robinson Township Fire Chief Paul VanVelzen. The fire chief said the preliminary investigation leads him to believe the cause was electrical.

EAST LANSING - The scoreboard at the Breslin Center on the campus of Michigan State University wasn't deceiving, but it did show something that Grand Haven's varsity girls basketball team didn't want to believe. For the first time in 27 games this season, Grand Haven had fewer points than its opponent after the final buzzer. The first cut for the Bucs - on the big stage of the Class A state semifinals - was the deepest.
