For the Vanstrate family, June 24 has become an annual pizza night celebration - marking the date they adopted two brothers exactly one year apart. Amy and Matt Vanstrate of Spring Lake adopted Austin, now 14, on June 24, 2009. Exactly one year later, they adopted Austin's half brother, Trever, now 10.

Harbor Humane Society's largest annual fundraiser, the Tails on Trails Dog Walk, will take place Saturday, Oct. 8, at Ottawa County's Kirk Park in West Olive. The public is invited to participate in the festivities - which include a walk along Lake Michigan, microchipping, contests, informational booths, carnival games for dogs and refreshments. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the walk starting at 11 a.m. A dog is not required for participation. The animal shelter will hold a raffle during the event, with winners drawn that day.

The employees of GHSP in Grand Haven volunteer at least three times each year to control invasive species at Ottawa County's Hemlock Crossing Park in Port Sheldon Township. The public is invited to join them for a "adopt-a-park' work bee on Tuesday, Sept. 27. They will also be helping with other park improvement projects that evening. Volunteers are asked to come to the park any time after 3:30 p.m. Snacks and beverages will be available at 5:30 p.m. The event will be rescheduled in case of rain.

Fifty to 75 pounds of kitten food a week - that's how much Harbor Humane Society uses, and right now they are within a few days of running out. The local humane society is asking the community to help by donating non-colored canned and/or dry kitten food. Cash donations or gift cards to places that sell kitten food are also welcomed. Any and all donations are appreciated and no amount is too small, Harbor Humane Society officials said.

Lisa Lungaro has been named executive director for the Harbor Humane Society. According to the announcement from the Ottawa County animal shelter, Lungaro has 25 years of experience in bank management, employee relations and other leadership roles in both commercial and nonprofit organizations. Lungaro previously worked at Macatawa Bank as an assistant vice president at the Douglas branch. Before that, she was an assistant branch manager at Old Kent Bank's Saugatuck and west-side Holland branches.

Ottawa County Parks is partnering with the Shoreline Amateur Astronomical Association of Holland to offer year-round astronomy programs for both beginning and experienced stargazers. The next program is "Tour the Night Sky,' scheduled for Saturday, July 30, at Hemlock Crossing County Park. It will begin at 9 p.m.
