Ottawa County Parks and The Outpost of Holland are offering a hiking and camping program at 7 p.m. Thursday. "What's New in Hiking and Camping' will be presented at the Ottawa County Parks Nature Education Center. Staff from The Outpost will conduct this one-hour indoor program to help you prepare for these experiences. A variety of day packs, foot wear, clothing, tents, sleeping bags, and other hiking and camping accessories will be discussed and displayed during this program for adults and older accompanied children.

The language of a Spring Lake man's petition to recall Sen. Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive, was rejected this morning by the Ottawa County Election Commission. Eric Doster, an attorney who argued on Meekhof's behalf, said that the petition language was unclear, and election commissioners agreed. Bob DeVries, Meekhof's chief of staff, was the only other person present at the hearing held at the Ottawa County Fillmore Complex, and was pleased with the commission's decision, he said.

Ottawa County Parks is hosting a talk by Dr. Paul Heidel from the Ottawa County Health Department on ticks and lyme disease. The program is Wednesday, June 22, at 7 p.m., and will be held at the Nature Education Center at Hemlock Crossing in Port Sheldon Township. Ticks have become more common in Ottawa County in recent years and studies have shown that some area ticks are carriers of lyme disease, Heidel said. Ticks are found in many outdoor areas, including vegetation near beaches.

When Carla Vanderploeg's 4-year-old cat disappeared three weeks ago, she thought her pet was gone for good. But the West Olive native said she was relieved when she received a call from the Harbor Humane Society that Esther Sue had been found. In 2010, Esther Sue was microchipped by Harbor Humane Society at an off-site microchip clinic at the shelter's thrift store, Shelby's Place. Microchipping a pet is the No. 1 step to reuniting a lost animal with their family, shelter officials said.

Harbor Humane Society is partnering with North Shore Animal League America by participating in the International Pet Adoptathon event next month. Thousands of shelters in dozens of countries are joining in this year's month-long Pet Adoptathon 2011 to find "forever homes' for each and every pet in its care. The adoptathon will run the entire month of May and Harbor Humane Society will offer $10 off all adoption fees.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department is trying to track down a thief stealing from area churches. West Olive Christian Reformed Church, Robinson Grace Bible Church and Lifetree Community Church have all been targeted over the past two weeks, police said. Deputies said the suspect also stole from Pigeon Creek Golf Course in Robinson Township. Investigators said the thief took small safes, cash and electronics worth about $10,000. Harbor Humane Society is preparing for "spring kitten season' and needs help. Due to the gestational period for unspayed cats, the majority of kittens are born in the late spring and early summer months. During the months of April, May and June, Harbor Humane Society will receive an average of 4-5 litters a day, equaling up to 30 cats and kittens. Some litters will be accompanied by their mother cat, but many will not.
