Saturday: A 'grande' day for building sandcastles

The third annual Castle Grande is planned for Saturday, June 18, at the Grand Haven City Beach.

This event is free and open to the public. No matter your sandcastle-building skill level, everyone is welcome to come have fun and learn how to build a better sand fortification between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The Chamber of Commerce of Grand Haven-Spring Lake-Ferrysburg has partnered once again with the Sand Fanatics, a West Michigan-based sand-sculpting team, to host the event.

The Sand Fanatics will provide tips on building outstanding sandcastles, as well as creating the main attraction. Their 7- to 8-foot-tall sandcastle will stand centrally, and each additional contribution will in turn create a sandcastle wall.

This is the first of two sandcastle events this summer. The second, the Grand Haven Sand Sculpture Contest, takes place this year on Aug. 13.

“This is the first year we have flip-flopped the two sandcastle-building events,” explained Courtney Geurink, event director for the local Chamber of Commerce. “We figured it makes more sense to have this educational event first so that people can try their hand at it before the (Sand Sculpture) contest. The original event was actually the Sand Fanatics’ idea, and last year was our first year partnering with them. It just seems to be growing in popularity every year — people want to contribute to Lake Michigan’s largest and tallest sandcastle.”

The team will be down at the beach “pounding up their sand” in preparation for the big event Saturday morning.
