Rain can't douse fire department open house

The worst of the rain and strong winds held off just long enough to get Grand Haven Department of Public Safety’s Fire Prevention Week open house in full swing on Saturday.

“The open house was well attended in spite of the dreary weather,” said Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke.

Participants rode fire trucks, learned how to use a fire hose and put on turnout gear, played in foam, painted pumpkins and checked out displays.

“This year, we had Pronto Pups, frozen yogurt from the Pump House and Bigby coffee. All donated and very popular!,” Hawke said.

The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “Every Second Counts: Plan Two Ways Out.”

Firefighters from all of the area departments have also been conducting fire prevention educational sessions in the schools.

The last open house in the area will be held from 6-8 Monday night at the Crockery Township Fire Department, corner of 112th Avenue and Apple Drive in Nunica.
