The Grand Haven girls basketball program held its annual banquet over the weekend, presenting the distinct honor of the Lela Johnson Memorial Scholarship Award.

Now in its 15th year, the award is presented in honor of Lela Johnson, who died of a heart attack as a freshman at Grand Haven in April 2003.

The honor is extended to the Grand Haven girls freshmen basketball player who displays outstanding sportsmanship, academic achievements and an overall love of the game that Lela possessed.

This year’s recipient was Olivia Dault, who led the Grand Haven junior varsity team with 4.2 steals per game and in free-throw percentage, shooting 68 percent from the line. Dault finished third on the team in scoring, averaging nearly seven points per game.

“Olivia Dault brought energy and toughness to the court every day,” said JV coach Corky Nyssen. “Her communication on the court and hustle fueled our team in practice and games.

“Olivia left it all on the court and was a difference maker with how she played and led our team with her voice.”
