The Spring Lake girls basketball team had a rough outing Friday night as they visited O-K Blue Conference foe Coopersville, falling to the Broncos by a final score of 67-35.

The game got off to a hot start with both teams nailing a flurry of shots in the opening minutes. Coopersville led 17-10 at the first break and 33-21 at halftime.

The second half was all Broncos, as they exploded from the three-point line and continued to shut down Spring Lake’s post game. By the time the fourth period began, the lead had ballooned to 51-27.

A crafty zone defense limited the Lakers’ effectiveness in the post, forcing open shots from the perimeter and contested looks inside to great effect. Overall, Spring Lake finished 15-for-50 from the floor, hitting four baskets in the first, second and fourth quarters and just three in the third.

Madeline Zenas led in scoring with 10 points, while pulling down just five rebounds. Jenna Core followed with nine points and three rebounds. Madeline Lisman and Phoebe Saunders each scored six points for the Lakers, while Abbi Perkins scored four to round out their total.

Cara VanKempen led the Broncos with 19 points, including five 3-pointers, followed by Sally Moore with 14 and Erin Mason with 11. Every player on Coopersville’s roster logged at least three points in the outing.

Ball security continued to plague Spring Lake as it has at times this season. The Lakers committed 16 turnovers over the course of the game.

The loss drops Spring Lake to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Broncos improve to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Spring Lake will return to action Tuesday as they host Comstock Park at 7 p.m.
