The Spring Lake boys basketball team fell behind early at West Catholic on Friday night and were never able to recover. The Falcons knocked down nine 3-pointers in the first half to build a big lead and coast to a 73-55 win over the Lakers.

West Catholic led 19-8 after the first quarter, 44-23 at halftime and 55-38 heading into the final quarter of play.

For the game, the Falcons knocked down 13-of-44 of their 3-point attempts.

“They just got hot from the perimeter early and we never really had an answer,” said Spring Lake head coach Bill Core. “They were clicking on all cylinders. They shared the ball well, which resulted in some open looks and we were down big early.

“We also had 24 turnovers for the game, so their pressure really got us at times. I really thought we took a step backward tonight. We’ve been competitive in just about every game this season, and we just didn’t do a good enough job in any category to beat a team that was just shooting lights out against us.”

Lucas Lyyski had 12 points, six rebounds and five assists to lead the Lakers, while Cayden Ball had eight points and Noah Verlinde and Grant Kieft each had seven. Isiah Lindsey added a spark off the bench with four points.

Spring Lake is now 4-14 overall and 1-9 in the O-K Blue Conference. They will travel to Sparta on Monday for a make-up game against the Spartans.

Junior varsity: Spring Lake defeated West Catholic, 61-53. Jaron Little led Spring Lake with 16 points, while Callum Saxe added 10 points in limited time due to foul trouble and Kaden George also added 10 points.

Freshmen: Spring Lake defeated Grand Rapids Catholic Central, 63-54. Porter Saunders led the Lakers with 19 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Jackson Core had 16 points and three steals. Spring Lake is now 14-2 on the year and 9-0 in conference play.
