The Spring Lake girls basketball team got back in the winning column Friday night with an O-K Blue Conference victory over West Catholic, 62-50.

The Lakers used an explosive first quarter to take a 23-9 lead at the first break, growing it to 35-17 by halftime. The Falcons pulled back in the second half, matching Spring Lake’s 17 points in the third quarter and outscoring them 16-10 in the final frame.

The defense of the Panthers’ best player was the key. Jennifer Judge, Laney Peasley and Natalie Sawyer teamed up to hold the league’s top scorer to just eight points, allowing the Laker offense to take over the game.

Jenna Core fought through a box-and-one defense for a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way, followed by Judge with 14 points. Madeline Zenas and Phoebe Saunders both pulled off double-double efforts, with Zenas scoring 12 points to go with 11 rebounds and Saunders scoring 11 points to go with 11 assists.

Together the Lakers finished 7-for-12 from the three-point line and 11-for-16 from the free-throw line. They outrebounded the Falcons 32-23.

The win improves the Lakers to 7-8 overall and 3-7 in conference play. They are scheduled to return to action Tuesday for a make-up game at Montague.
