Girls hoops district semifinals preview

Tribune Staff • Mar 6, 2019 at 12:09 AM

The girls basketball state tournament is scheduled to continue tonight with the district semifinal round. Four local teams are still alive in pursuit of a trophy in Friday’s title round. Check out their matchups below.

Spring Lake vs. Oakridge

Where: Whitehall HS

When: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Lakers 11-9, Eagles 18-3

Last meeting: 2018 district semis, Oakridge 46, Spring Lake 33

Path: Spring Lake enjoyed a bye through the opening round, while Oakridge defeated Whitehall (17-3), 50-42

Trib pick: Oakridge

With one hard-earned win over conference rival and fellow top-tier opponent Whitehall, Oakridge is flying high coming into their matchup with Spring Lake. It will take a perfect game from the Lakers, featuring all of their scoring weapons and a hard night of defense, to get revenge for their 2018 tournament loss.

Fruitport vs. Orchard View

Where: Whitehall HS

When: 6 p.m.

Records: Fruitport 4-17, Orchard View 3-13

Last meeting: Feb. 28, Fruitport 47, Orchard View 22

Path: Fruitport defeated Montague, 29-25 in the opening round, while Orchard View enjoyed a bye.

Trib pick: Fruitport

The Trojans grabbed just their fourth win of the season in an absolute defensive battle with Montague, but it was their second win in one week. In the final days of the regular season, Orchard View and Fruitport met for a potential district-preview matchup, with the Trojans running away with the lead. If Fruitport can spread their scoring out and stay consistent through four quarters on defense, I like them to reach the title round.

WMC vs. Ravenna

Where: Ravenna HS

When: 7 p.m.

Records: WMC 16-3, Ravenna 7-12

Last meeting: 2017 district opener, WMC 63, Ravenna 25

Path: Both teams enjoyed byes through the first round

Trib pick: WMC

The Warriors have taken care of business all season behind the high-powered offense of Meghan Heiss, Taylor Folkema and Anna Sytsema, while excelling on defense with their imposing post presence. Both will be a factor tonight in what is expected to be a lopsided contest.

FCC vs. Muskegon Heights

Where: Muskegon Catholic Central HS

When: 5:30 p.m.

Records: FCC 15-5, Muskegon Heights 0-16

Last meeting: Jan. 21, FCC 66, Heights 18

Path: FCC’s first-round game ended before it began as the West Michigan Environmental Academy forfeited. Muskegon Heights enjoyed a bye.

Trib pick: FCC

Two familiar opponents are scheduled to meet in the Division 4 semifinals, both in their first postseason contest of the year. Muskegon Heights’ only hope is to catch the Eagles on a rusty, off night. Even their worst performance, though, may not be enough during a tough year for the Tigers. FCC’s potent scoring from Kelsey Richards and dominant rebounding by Brionna Johnson will earn them a routine spot in the district finals Friday.
