Improve 3rd-grade reading skills

As a sufferer of dyslexia, I practiced reading one hour every night to become proficient. That’s why I find these low rankings to be unacceptable.

The good news is that we can and we are doing better.

To tackle this, Michigan’s FY2016 budget includes a new $26 million investment to improve literacy and increase third-grade reading proficiency. The budget included an array of supports from birth through third grade, and is just the beginning framework to continue the dialogue on what improves third-grade reading proficiency and how to best fund those efforts.

It’s important that kids improve literacy by fourth grade because it means they can then read to learn. When kids can read, it helps to ensure that they can be winners in school and beyond.
