Grand Haven Roundup: Haven bowling team, wrestlers wrap up seasons

The Grand Haven bowling team ran into the eventual Division 1 state champs on Friday at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights.

Grand Haven actually defeated champion Wyandotte Roosevelt in the first Baker game, 210-172. But the Bears roared back against the Bucs, rolling a 207-106 in the second Baker game and a 934-900 in the regular game.

Wyandotte totaled 1,313 pins to Grand Haven’s 1,266.

The Bears went on to beat U-D Jesuit (1,334-1,160) and Macomb L’Anse Creuse North (1,342-1,211) to take the title.

Grand Haven’s Jimmy Mitchell and Meagan Batka will compete for Division 1 individual state titles at Sterling Lanes today.

GH grapplers compete at Day 2 of state finals

Grand Haven’s Juan Becerra and Jared Lancaster each won a match at Friday’s Division 1 individual state wrestling meet at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Becerra earned a sudden-victory win against Logan Mabbitt of Davidson at 189 pounds, while Lancaster came up victorious against Chris Nader of North Farmington at heavyweight.

Caledonia’s Zane Gorby defeated Becerra via decision in his next match, with Lancaster falling to Caledonia’s Andrew Bowen.

Grand Haven’s Caleb Braley lost his match against Kemonte Simons of Southfield at 119 pounds via decision.

All three Grand Haven grapplers lost their initial matches on Thursday.
