Winter Sports Preview: Bowling

The Grand Haven boys and girls bowling teams are at two separate stages in their program development this winter. The boys return many key performers from last year’s squad that finished eighth in the state, while the girls team must try and find a way to replace the majority last year’s O-K Red Conference champions.

It will be an interesting winter season for both clubs, but one that should include plenty of invitational titles and hopefully — a pair of state tournament appearances.

Last year: Boys: 6-2 overall, O-K Red Conference champions, regional champions, finished eighth in the state, and won two of five invitational wins

Girls: finished 8-0 overall, O-K Red Conference champions, four of five invitational wins.

Key returners:

Boys: Jimmy Mitchell (three-time All-State and All-Conference selection), Logan Batka, Maverick Green, Jonathan Garland.

Girls: Breanna Olthof (All-Conference last season), Meagan Batka (All-Conference last season).

“I’m looking forward to my ninth season as head coach,” said boys coach Pat Mitchell. “We’ve incorporated some new drills for the teams that are already paying off in how they throw the ball. Our goal is to build consistency through efficiency and continued communication, which is key to stay a step ahead of our opponents.”
