SPRING LAKE — The 24th annual Thanksgiving Community Feast served up more than 900 meals with the help of more than 100 volunteers at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Thursday afternoon.

Hundreds dined in, while others signed up for takeout or delivery.

In the process, volunteers went through 34 turkeys, 30 large pans of stuffing and mashed potatoes, 10 gallons of gravy, 60 pounds of carrots and cranberry salad and 114 pumpkin pies.

The annual event, sponsored by local businesses and churches, was headed up by Dan Steigenga and his family, who have taken the reins on the feast since its inception.

After an opening prayer by Pastor Dan Anderson of Spring Lake Presbyterian Church, Steigenga looked over the crowd with pride Thursday afternoon.

“This is what it’s all about,” Steigenga said.

He also joked with the crowd, saying “If you go home hungry, it’s not my fault.”
