Change a life: Shop 'Gifts for Change'

• Nov 27, 2017 at 2:00 PM

“Gifts for Change” is a fair trade sale that will take place 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 2-3 at St. Patrick’s/St. Anthony’s Family Center, 901 Columbus Ave., Grand Haven.

The sale features a wide range of items, from blown ornaments from Egypt, carved wooden crosses from Jerusalem and woven baskets from Ghana. Not only are you purchasing hand-made items, but the monies from your purchase are returned to the artisans themselves, helping to lift them from poverty.

They may be purchasing systems to purify their family’s water system, paying to send their children to school or allowing them to purchase more animals to insure a steady income for their family.

This year’s event includes West Michigan organizations such as Kid’s Food Basket, Extended Grace, Beads for Life and items from Humanity for Prisoners. Local residents have created items to benefit Happy Hands for Honduras (an orphanage) and The Apparent Project benefiting Haiti.

St. Pat’s/St. Anthony’s parishioners will also sell hand-crafted items, baked goods and hot chocolate mixes, as well as fair trade coffee, tea, chocolate and olive oil. In addition, Women At Risk, Global Gifts, Heifer International, Aldea Coffee and the Bethlehem Olive Wood Carvers will sell their products.

A soup lunch will be available, provided by the St. Pat/s/St. Anthony’s Haiti Ministry. Proceeds for the lunch go to St. Simon/St. Jude in Haiti.
