On Flag Day, Metzler had a small display of flags on the front porch of her Arlington Avenue home. She also wore a T-shirt painted with a flag.
The wooden flags with the Army emblem were made by Ross Holman of Grand Haven, she said. The flag containing the Pledge of Allegiance was made by another friend.
An Army flag flying on the front of the house had to be replaced Wednesday night.
“For the last three years, someone has stolen it,” Metzler said. That has been happening during the day and she said she has no clue who is doing it.
The American Legion member can often be seen participating in honor guards at funerals or at Memorial Day events.
Thursday morning, for the first time, she assisted Grand Haven Rotarians in putting flags around town.
“I got a little behind,” she admitted. “They move fast.”
Metzler said she climbed in the trailer and handed out flags to the runners. She said she would be back out there in the evening to help pick up the flags and hoped to be done in time to attend a flag-burning ceremony at the American Legion post.
