Jennifer Ostrander apologized to her former employers before being sentenced to a year in jail for stealing money from the Grand Haven store.

The Norton Shores woman faced up to five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine when she was sentenced on an embezzling charge Monday in Ottawa County Circuit Court.

Jennifer Ostrander, 47, admitted to taking $2,485 from Tri-City Pool & Spa last fall while working “mostly by myself” in the company’s Grand Haven store.

Ottawa County Prosecutor Ron Frantz disputed the dollar amount, saying that it should be $4,285. The higher figure is what Judge Karen Miedema ordered Ostrander to pay during sentencing.

“I’m sorry I did it,” Ostrander said when given a chance to make a statement in court. Referring to the store’s owners, “Greg and Brian didn’t deserve it,” she added.

Ostrander told the judge she planned to work harder to stay clean so she could be with her children again.

“Your criminal record is extensive,” Miedema said. “You use a lot of different drugs.”

Miedema gave Ostrander credit for 64 days already spent in jail. The judge told Ostrander that she could be released after serving 300 days, if the restitution is paid in full.
