Muskegon residents Larry and Brenda Davis will take turns spending weekends in the Ottawa County Jail after pleading guilty to stealing from Brenda’s former employer, The Home Depot store in Grand Haven.

“The court feels it’s necessary for you to have a concrete sanction,” Judge Karen Miedema said to Brenda Davis, 50, at her sentencing Monday in Ottawa County Circuit Court. “It was a series of deliberate decisions … to steal.”

The Davises were each sentenced to three days in jail and one year of probation. They were also ordered to pay almost $2,000 in restitution to The Home Depot.

Both Davises expressed remorse and apologized to the store, as well as to their families, the court and the community.

At a plea hearing Oct. 15, Brenda Davis told the judge that when she was working as a cashier at the Grand Haven store, she let her husband purchase merchandise at discounted prices. Some items she just “zeroed out,” she said.

Larry Davis, 46, said it happened six or seven times. The merchandise included a ladder, paint rollers, molding and doors.

“We needed it for our home,” he said at the time of the plea.

Miedema allowed the couple to alternate their weekends in jail so someone could be home with their children.
