A 33-year-old Spring Lake woman was ordered to serve 180 days in jail despite her attorney’s request for reduced jail time from what was recommended for the retail fraud incident.

“Jail has been a very tough experience for Tonya,” said her attorney, Bob Zitta.

However Judge Karen Miedema said that she planned to follow the probation department’s recommendation and ordered Tanya Lee McDonald to serve 180 days in jail with credit for 91 days already served.

The judge said that she was sticking with the recommendation because of McDonald’s prior criminal activity.

“You need a concrete jail sanction,” Miedema said.

McDonald was also ordered to have no contact with the victim, plus pay a $250 fine plus costs.

At a plea hearing on Nov. 12, officials noted that McDonald was in the Meijer in Grand Haven Township on July 17. She took makeup valued between $200-$1,000.

In exchange for her plea, prosecutors agreed that no similar offenses known to police would be charged and that she also would not be charged as a habitual offender.

McDonald was also convicted of second-degree retail fraud in 2013.
