HOLLAND TWP. — New criminal charges have been filed against the father of an 18-year-old suspected of shooting and killing 14-year-old Troy “T.J.” Wells in Holland Township last month, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

Juan Sandro Cabrera, 18, was arrested in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula nearly two weeks after allegedly killing Wells in a hallway at the Hampton Inn hotel off Felch Street on Feb. 16. Cabrera’s father, 34-year-old Juan Pablo “John Paul” Cabrera, was arrested by police after absconding from his parole shortly after his son was named as a murder suspect.

The Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office authorized additional felony charges against Cabrera Sr. on March 19, including obstructing police by lying during a homicide investigation and being a habitual offender.

“This is a result of Juan Pablo making knowingly false statements to sheriff’s detectives during the investigation of the murder,” said Capt. Mark Bennett of the Sheriff’s Office.

Bennett said the Cabreras remain in police custody and “additional charges are likely related to this homicide investigation.”

The homicide is believed to be tied to a gang dispute between the Holland Latin Kings gang, which the Cabreras are known to have family ties, and the Gangster Disciples gang, of which Wells was allegedly a member.

Police are still seeking additional information about the murder, and those with information should contact Silent Observer at 877-887-4536.

Juan Sandro Cabrera is expected to appear in court the week of April 15 for a preliminary examination hearing. The court proceedings are expected to last a day.
