Fruitport man gets prison for sexual contact with teen

A 34-year-old Fruitport man was sent to prison for a minimum two years and up to 15 years when sentenced last week in Ottawa County Circuit Court.

Safet Avdulahaj must also register as a sex offender and can have no contact with the victim of the sexual incident that occurred in late July of 2018 in the Coopersville area.

Although defense attorney Terry Nolan asked for jail time for his client, Judge Karen Miedema said there was exploitation of the victim, thus the more severe sentence.

Miedema said that Avdulahaj made a call from the jail to the mother of the 15-year-old girl instructed her to take the girl to the prosecutor and tell him that the incident didn’t happen.

“This defendant did attempt to interfere with justice,” Miedema said. “He makes it clear he wants the victim to recant. The tone and the demand showed control.”

Avdulahaj apologized, blaming his mental illness and the medications that he takes.

“I never meant for all of this to happen,” he said. “I never meant to hurt any of them.”
