Hylens, Borchers dominate Coast Guard runs

Runners, walkers and every gait in between celebrated the start of Coast Guard Festival 2018 with an early morning Saturday as the annual Tri-Cities YMCA Coast Guard Festival 5/10k and family fun run.

Conditions were fair as the 5k race kicked off mid-sunrise at 7:30, followed by the 10k at 8:30 and the one-mile family fun run at 8:45.

Over 1,850 runners participated in Saturday’s events. 

As is customary over the last few community races, Spring Lake High School cross country and track standouts Andrew and Ben Hylen paced the field in the 5k. Andrew took first over at with a time of 15 minutes, 45.28 seconds, ahead of his twin at 15:45.66.

Former Grand Haven standout and University of Michigan All-American runner Claire Borchers dominated the day, finishing as the first female across the line in both the 5k (18:15.47) and the 10k (38:34).

The race featured a diverse field of all ages, including a few accomplished runners in the masters division. Eric Quinn proved his mettle with a 2-for-2 performance. The 41-year-old from Onekama took the age 40+ title in the 5k in 16:39.44 for ninth overall, and the 10k in 36:10 for sixth overall.

Kym Matthews of Jenison took the female master’s 5k victory in 21:44.09, while Laura LaPorte of Trenton took the 10k win at 45:15.
