Each Friday on the pages of the Tribune and online at grandhaventribune.com, we will highlight a Classroom of the Week.

This feature sheds light on the work students and teachers are doing, and it lets the community know what makes each class special.

Here’s more about this week’s featured classroom:

Teacher's name: Shari Sigsby

Number of students: 22

School: Mary A. White Elementary School

Grade: First

What makes your classroom special? We think that our classroom is like one big family. We all try our best to be kind and get along with each other. We have a lot of Spartan stuff in our room because Mrs. Sigsby loves MSU. We’re learning about China and its culture, so our desk tags have our names written in Chinese characters. It’s been fun trying to learn how to write them. We have lots of books because we love to read!

What is your classroom's motto? Be kind — treat others how you want to be treated. We work hard at being good friends because we know that kindness will come back to you.

What is your classroom the most proud of? We’re really proud of how far we’ve come as readers this year. We love Readers Workshop because you can read quietly by yourself, but we also love to read with a buddy.

Fun fact about your classroom: We just finished reading “Because of Winn Dixie,” so we had a dog party with egg salad sandwiches, pickles and punch. Mrs. Sigsby’s dog, Louie, got to be our celebrity guest.

What would you like the community to know? We want everyone to know how much we love learning and coming to school at Mary A White. We know we aren’t good at everything yet, but we’ll keep trying.
