Each Friday on the pages of the Tribune and online at grandhaventribune.com, we will highlight a Classroom of the Week.

This feature sheds light on the work students and teachers are doing, and it lets the community know what makes each class special.

Here’s more about this week’s featured classroom:

Teacher's name: Mrs. Jan Bator

Number of students: 25

School: St. Mary’s School

Grade: First grade

What makes your classroom special? “The first-grade classroom is special because it has a cozy loft area for the students to read their favorite stories.”

What is your classroom's motto? “Be a bucket filler. This encourages kindness and love to everyone because we are all God’s children. Everyone is important and alike in being human and loved by God.”

What is your classroom the most proud of? “The students are working hard on becoming good readers. They have a reading tree in the hallway that showcases all the books they have read for the month. An entire wall is filled with leaves listing the books they have read.”

Fun fact about your classroom: “The students will perform a skit on the great state of Michigan in the spring.”

What would you like the community to know? “The first-grade class has an annual hat and mitten tree during Advent when they collect new hats and mittens to give to families in need. They also enjoy caroling and visiting with the residents of Evergreen Village at Christmastime.”

Classroom of the Week is sponsored by Little Smiles and Smile Orthodontics.
