Each Friday on the pages of the Tribune and online at grandhaventribune.com, we will highlight a Classroom of the Week.

This feature sheds light on the work students and teachers are doing, and it lets the community know what makes each class special.

Here’s more about this week’s featured classroom:

Teacher's name: Mindy Jacobs

Number of students: 22

School: Ferry

Grade: Young Fives

What makes your classroom special? Young Fives is a unique program that gives children an extra year to develop social and emotional skills necessary to do well in their further education. Young fives allows children to grow at an age appropriate pace and gives children who are considered at-risk the academic support they need to be successful in kindergarten.

What is your classroom motto? Play is a necessity, not a luxury.

What is your classroom the most proud of? Learning to be independent by following a school routine, learning to be part of a school family and community, and having caring hearts.

Fun fact about your classroom: We love to sing and dance.

What would you like the community to know? Young Fives is such an important program. I think our community needs to see why play is so important in the early grades. Children should love school and be excited to be there. It is my job to instill of love of learning for my students at an early age.

Classroom of the Week is sponsored by Little Smiles and Smile Orthodontics.
