Meet Mrs. Clark’s Great Start Readiness Preschool class

What makes your classroom special? Most definitely, the children. Each child brings something unique and special to our classroom. They all have different character strengths and abilities that allow them to express their individuality in a social environment. It is what makes them special and in turn, our classroom special.

In addition to the curriculum, what are some things you teach your students? That’s a tough question because I think our curriculum touches most everything you can think of when it comes to early childhood. Our curriculum covers all areas and objectives for development and learning; social-emotional, physical, cognitive, language, literacy, mathematics, science, social studies and the arts. Within all these objectives, however, I strive to teach the children to be assertive, to learn they have a voice, to know their opinion matters, and their ideas are valued.

What special project is your classroom working on now? With the holidays coming up, I’m sure we will be getting started on some special “gift” projects to say thank you to all our hard working moms and dads (but, shhh! this is a secret).

How is your classroom involved with the community? Every day, we are encouraging small acts of kindness. We have a fun and silly mascot displayed in our room. Her name is Katalina Matalina… she comes from a song which is about a girl who may dress and look silly, but what truly matters is her heart that is made of purest gold. We talk about what it means to have a heart as pure as gold. We learn our acts of kindness don’t need to stop within the boundaries of our classroom. Throughout the year, we discuss how we can be caring members of our community. Some ideas have been helping a family member who has had a rough day or caring for a pet. Through these special acts, our children are learning the power of caring. They learn that even the smallest of children can make a difference in our community.

How do you hope what your students are learning now will affect their future? When it comes to the value of early childhood education, I don’t just have to “hope”… I know what my students are learning now will affect their future in the most positive of ways. Quality early childhood care and education improves children’s cognitive development, emotional development, self-regulation skills and academic achievement. This, is in the long term, will help them achieve long term employment, income and improved health. I believe investing in early childhood programs is one of the best investments a school district can make.
