The group from the school’s Pay It Forward class will host The Never Again Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at the Grand Haven Community Center, 421 Columbus Ave. Tickets are $20, or $140 for a table of eight. Tickets will be paid for at the door.
RSVP by emailing [email protected] The deadline to RSVP is Dec. 30.
All of the proceeds from the event will go to the Children’s Advocacy Center of Ottawa County. The center provides services such as child assessments, forensic interviews, medical exams, counseling and family advocacy.
After hearing how the agency works with children and their families, GHHS senior Hailey Bethke said her group was touched and knew they wanted to help raise awareness and funds. Bethke, 17, said she was surprised to learn the advocacy center provides counseling not only for the victim but also for members of the victim’s family.
The dinner will include music and a Dutch auction. A father and son will also speak about how the agency helped them. GHHS students will read anonymous stories of others who have been touched by the agency. Given the content of the stories, the student group suggests that nobody younger than 16 attend the event.
When the group started reaching out to local businesses for donations and sponsors, GHHS senior Jake Williams said he was surprised at the community’s positive response.
Bethke said she enrolled in the Pay It Forward class because she wanted to make a difference, and her friends said the class changed their perception.
Williams, 18, said the class helps expand their views and shines a light on efforts happening in the community.
“It inspires you to want to make change happen,” he said.
As the group prepares for the dinner, they’re also looking for sponsors. Individuals or businesses interested in becoming a sponsor or donate items for the auction should contact Hailey Bethke at [email protected]
