SPRING LAKE TWP. — The world of Dr. Seuss is alive this week on stage and in song.

Students involved in the Spring Lake Summer Theatre Expo will perform “Seussical Jr.” at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, July 18-19, at Spring Lake High School. Tickets will be sold at the door for $5.

The show was selected for a few reasons — it’s fun, family-friendly and everyone knows Dr. Seuss, said Haley Longcore, one of the show’s student directors.

“It’s wacky,” added Isabella Ziegenthaler, who plays the Cat in the Hat.

After auditions in June, about 70 students have rehearsed five mornings a week. Since the show features a lot of singing, Longcore said it took a little longer for everyone to learn their parts.

Longcore said she enjoys seeing students learn and grow their passion for theater. With opening night one day away, she said the production is going well.

Over the years, 14-year-old Nai’a McSheehy has participated in theater and continued that passion this summer. McSheehy, who plays Horton, described the show as something unlike anything they’ve done in the past.

Grace Cooper, who plays the character Mayzie LaBird, joined the cast because of her love for theater. Cooper said she loves that everyone is working hard and cares about the show.

McSheehy also hopes this week’s audiences enjoy the show.

“I hope they have a good time,” Cooper added.
