UPDATE 2:15 p.m.

Power has been restored at Grand Haven High School.

According to a post on Twitter, power was restored at approximately 1:45 p.m.

School officials have reported an estimated time of 1:15 p.m. to have power restored at Grand Haven High School.

In the meantime, a generator running the cafeteria is allowing them to maintain the lunch program.

Classes are running as scheduled.

GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP — Power is out at Grand Haven High School, but classes are remaining in session, officials said.

“We are currently without power because of a tree down in our area. We are waiting to hear from Consumers Power on an estimated time of restoration,” Principal Tracy Wilson said in a tweet and in an email to parents at about 11:15 a.m.

Grand Haven Township firefighters responded to 17056 Ferris St., across the street from the high school just before 11 a.m. on a call of a power pole on fire.

No fire was found, but within a short time of the original call, they received a request to go to the high school to assist three people stuck in an elevator.

Fire Chief Tom Gerencer said when the power went out, the school was operating on generator power. But the generator does not operate the elevator.

The elevator was in a stopped position on the second floor, Gerencer said. Firefighters had just arrived when the adult and two students inside the elevator were able to push the door open and evacuate the elevator. The people were out of the elevator within 10 minutes of the call for help.

“No one was injured and the school remains on generator power,” Gerencer said.

The outage is believed to be caused when some pieces of equipment on a utility pole failed, caused a small fire and the power disruption, Gerencer said.

There were no trees down, he added.

The Consumers Energy outage map, as of 11:27 a.m., showed that  crews have been assigned to respond to the area.
