The Ottawa County Fair is underway this week and the event is an interest to both locals and visitors.

The 4-H animal show took place on Tuesday, with many of the participants receiving the positive recognition they sought.

Sarah Kaptein has brought her livestock from her grandparent’s farm in Zeeland to the Ottawa County Fair for the past five years.

“We bring them into the arena and the cows get judged in different categories — showmanship, appearance and something called dairyness — but don’t ask me what that is,” said the 14-year-old Kaptein. “My cow, Mary Mae, won first overall, which was super awesome. She’s only two years old.”

Sarah’s sister, Emma, also participated in the 4-H competition and received second place in the showmanship category with her cow.

Andrew Aliaga and his entire family travel from Lighthouse Point, Florida, every summer right around this time.

“We stay at my grandpa’s summer home and always come during this time in order to make it to the fair,” said Aliaga.

The fair will continue through July 30, with different featured events occurring each night in the grandstand arena. For more information on the fair, visit their website at www.ottawacountyfair.com.
