Carnival lights up Grand Haven's streets, faces

The 2016 Coast Guard Festival’s downtown carnival officially opened for fun-seekers on Tuesday.

On Wednesday evening, Nathan Eagle, 22, recommended the Gravitron ride for the more adventurous carnival-goers.

“It’s been so long since I’ve ridden it,” the Grand Haven man said. “It’s supposedly a little on the dangerous side, so I haven’t seen it around since I was little.”

Naturally, the carnival-esque cuisine has also made its way to the streets. Elephant ears, fresh-squeezed lemonade and even a root beer brewery stand seemed to be crowd favorites.

Along with the classic rides, such as the Merry-go-round and Ferris wheel, the carnival has brought in the Fireball, Himalaya, Zipper and Gravitron for those who come seeking an adrenaline rush.

The carnival will be open again from 2-11 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and noon to 11 p.m. Saturday. Wristbands are $20 and only good for their purchased time block.
