Dogs pull out 32nd annual Winterfest event

Fourteen dogs pulled stuffed animals or one of their owners in the 32nd annual Winterfest Family Dog Pull held Saturday morning at Mulligan’s Hollow.

“It was just great weather,” said Kevin Tuuk, owner of the Grand Haven business, The City Farmer, which has sponsored the event every year.

“We had great participation,” he said. “It’s always a fun family time.”

The dogs, divided into four weight classes, raced down short tracks lined with straw, their owners trying to coax them down the straightway.

Some of the dogs decided they liked the other lane better. Others just didn’t want to go at all.

“What’s fun about it is you’ve got the kids and their dogs,” Tuuk said.

He did note that there is usually more participation when the weather is cold and snowy in contrast with the somewhat balmy 40 degrees on Saturday.

Winners received a certificate and everyone got a free sample of dog food.
