FERRYSBURG — Firefighters from three area departments responded to a house fire at 504 Fifth St. in Ferrysburg at about 2:30 p.m. Friday.

The homeowner, John Stafford, said he went outside for a few minutes to talk to some neighbor kids and found the dishwasher on fire when he returned inside. Stafford said he was running the dishwasher after having some Thanksgiving leftovers.

When he found the fire, Stafford ran outside and yelled for the neighbors to call 911.

Next-door neighbor Ryan Whalley said he grabbed a garden hose while making the call and was able to put enough water on the fire to slow it down, but not put it out.

Firefighters who finished the job said the fire was contained to the dishwasher and the nearby wall and cabinet in the home’s kitchen.

A damage estimate was not available.

Ferrysburg, Spring Lake and Crockery Township firefighters have an automatic mutual aid response for a house fire call.
