WRIGHT TWP. — A 54-year-old Alabama man remained hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday following a two-car crash Monday night in Ottawa County’s Wright Township.

William Smith of Madison, Ala., was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, said Sgt. Matt Wildfong of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Ambulances transported Smith and the driver of the other car in the crash — Sherri Gereaux, 44, of Conklin — to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, police said. Hospital officials verified Smith’s condition on Tuesday, but said they did not have any information for Gereaux.

Wildfong said Smith was traveling west on Arthur in a 2016 Toyota Camry when he failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with Gereaux’s 2013 Ford Taurus, which was northbound on Eighth Avenue, shortly before 8 p.m. Monday. Both vehicles went into the ditch and Gereaux’s car rolled over, Wildfong said.

Smith was ticketed for failure to yield the right of way.
