GRAND RAPIDS —Firefighters pulled a helpless kayaker from the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids late Sunday afternoon.

Crews were dispatched to the Bridge Street bridge around 5:20 p.m.

Dispatch reports indicated a man's kayak had flipped, and he was hanging onto one of the bridge's pillars.

Upon arrival, crews reported the man was standing underneath the bridge in the water. He was safely pulled out of the river about 20 minutes later.

Some of his belongings, however, continued to float downstream, according to dispatch reports.
