HOLLAND TWP. — A 51-year-old Holland man who was pulled unconscious from his vehicle after it sank into a pond Tuesday afternoon has died.

Jeffrey Adkins was pronounced dead early Wednesday at Holland Hospital, said Sgt. Dean DeVries of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

The cause of death has yet to be determined by the medical examiner’s office, DeVries said.

A witness reported seeing the car jump a curb and drive into the pond, which is located on North Wellness Drive, north of Riley Street in Holland Township. That happened at about 4:10 p.m. Tuesday.

The vehicle was completely underwater until emergency crews were able to remove it shortly before 5 p.m. Adkins was underwater for about 40 minutes, police said.

The only occupant of the vehicle, identified as Adkins, was then rushed to the hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at 4:16 a.m. Wednesday.
