PORT SHELDON TWP. — A Twin Lake man was sent to the hospital Monday morning after crashing the van that he was driving into a tree in Port Sheldon Township.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies said during the investigation they learned that the 1996 Econoline van had been recently stolen in the City of Grand Rapids.

Police said the man was driving the van on Butternut Drive, south of VanBuren Street, at about 4:30 a.m. Monday. He reached for a lighter, lost control of the vehicle and the van ran into the gravel on the right side of the road. The man overcorrected the van and it went across both traffic lanes and smashed into a tree off the northbound lanes, police said.

Firefighters assisting at the scene said the van also rolled several times.

An ambulance transported the man to a hospital in southwest Ottawa County, police said, where he was listed in stable condition Monday.

Police did not immediately release the man’s name pending possible charges and arraignment.

The crash remains under investigation.
