COOPERSVILLE — A group of roof trusses fell, taking down some construction workers with them Monday afternoon at the Ottawa County Road Commission salt barn under construction in Coopersville.

Three construction workers from Woods Carpentry of Ada suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the fall, said Sgt. Bob Ruster of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. All three were in stable condition at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids late Monday afternoon.

Other construction workers assisted two of the men from the debris, Ruster said. A third person was more seriously injured and was removed on a stretcher.

Ambulances transported all three men to the hospital.

The new Road Commission salt barn is going up along 68th avenue, north of I-96. The workers were setting 80-foot trusses for its roof at the time of the 2:50 p.m. incident.

According to witnesses, a gust of wind came from the south-southwest and blew over an unsecured truss into several others. In all, 11 trusses and three workers dropped 30-35 feet to the ground.

Coopersville-Polkton firefighters responded to the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
